ERNST, the performing ape, turns eighty. A young woman becomes an 80-year-old male ape, caught between decades of domestication and a deep, untamed longing for the wild. The performance unfolds as a reflection on obedience, power, and the invisible rules that shape life, tracing the tension between free will and the longing to belong in a world that always casts some as outsiders. Through subtle, tragically comic humor, ERNST examines humankind through the nonhuman, exploring gender, identity, and the quiet ache of otherness. Music, dance, and the striking set by Danish artist Christian Friedländer conjure a world at once absurd, touching, and profoundly human. It’s a celebration in all seriousness, a dazzling homage to humorlessness, and a firework display of restrained emotions. A celebration of humanity. Against the grain of deadly seriousness? Music! Dance! Cigarettes! Apples! ERNST is a production by toaspern|moeller in co-production with Theater Freiburg and 4fT - Tanzplattform Leipzig.
